Tony Cawson, 75 and in the early stages of dementia, has a dreadful secret dating back to his youth of which his daughter Rebecca is ashamed and which she dreads her children will discover. But Rebecca, a conflicted individual in a failing marriage, also has secrets in her past which she wishes to keep from them, and from her husband. As Tony's dementia worsens, and as Rebecca's inner conflicts lead to irrational behaviour, incidents occur which result in the gradual revelation of these secrets, with consequences for the whole family. Have the sins of the parents been passed down unto the third and fourth generation?

It is 2002, and Dave is 59. A former university lecturer, he had to retire after suffering horrific facial injuries which have resulted in his becoming a recluse. He becomes emotionally dependent on his counsellor, Susie. Susie encourages him to end his isolation by making on-line contact with his former school-friends whom he has not seen since he left his home town. E-mails are exchanged, and his old friends begin to confide in him about each other. Dave realises he can influence their lives by breaking these confidences. He begins to act as a puppet-master, with devastating consequences not only for his former friends, but ultimately for Dave himself.

Mike Carter has been a lecturer at Streetbridge College of Further Education for 30 years. He has been the leader of the pack, scourge of college management, seducer of students, colleagues and wives of colleagues. But now, approaching 60, things are going awry. The younger lecturers are no longer in thrall to him, his powers of seduction are declining, and those whom he has offended over the years, sensing his diminishing influence, are seeking to exact revenge. Meanwhile, Marcia Martell, the young, newly appointed Principal, is determined to drag the institution into the 21st century in the face of foot-dragging by the older members of her management team and opposition from the lecturers' union. She issues a memorandum to staff imposing a new code of dress and behaviour: this is seized on by Mike Carter as an opportunity to re-assert his waning influence by leading the fight against her. However, the politics of the workplace are muddied by events in the personal lives of the protagonists, and by antagonisms and jealousies between individuals, generations and competing interest groups. This is a tense portrayal of a mystery in Martin's past, and its affect on his life and relationships - chiefly between him and his wife Jennifer, and another couple, Stephen and Jacqui. The main themes explored in this novel are the impact of a single traumatic event on the life of an individual, the fragility of friendship, the effects of aging and changes in personality on relationships, and the impact of class origin and childhood upbringing on later life, all played out in the seeming tranquility of the Yorkshire Dales.

In 2007, six friends meet in London for a pub-crawl to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their graduation from a Leeds University. As the day progresses, tensions develop resulting from their differing perspectives on modern society, from the hostile atmosphere in some of the pubs and streets, and from the suspicion each begins to have that the others may be harbouring secrets. These are gradually revealed - Tony is an alcoholic, Nigel has a handicapped son and his marriage is under strain, Vivienne (now married to Eric) and Tony may have had a fling while at university, and in later years Vivienne may have had a lengthy affair with Nigel. Alan and Jim also have secrets - Alan is dying and Jim is in a gay relationship. The climax to the story is an altercation with some yobs on the London Underground in which Eric is seriously injured. The final chapter is set 10 months later after Alan's funeral. As the result of his injuries, Eric cannot remember what he'd learned of his wife's unfaithfulness with Nigel, but his memory is improving daily. He wishes to resume contact with Nigel, and Vivienne has to make an uncomfortable choice.
